We are delighted that activist, model, and writer, Munroe Bergdorf, will open International Women’s Day Festival at the MAC.

Munroe, who has used their iconic status to push for positive change, to advocate for a fairer and more equitable world, and to platform trans women’s rights, had their significant contribution as an activist recognised in 2020 when they were appointed as a United Nations Woman UK Changemaker. 

Munroe’s first book, Transitional, is due for release this autumn. Drawing on their own life experience, including growing up in a mixed-race family, attending an all-boys school, and starting their transition at age 24, the book examines themes of adolescence, sexuality, gender, relationships, identity, and race. Munroe describes the book as ‘a manifesto for how I see society changing for the better, bringing us all closer’. 

This event sees Dr. Yassin Brunger, Lecturer in Human Rights Law and Co-Director of the Queens University, Belfast, Gender Network, in conversation with Munroe about how their experiences have shaped their activism. Conversation will include cancel culture vs. accountability, the representation of Black women and trans women, as well as Black Lives Matter, and how to embed your activism in your everyday.
