Dr. Yassin Brunger: Ain’t I a Woman?

  • MAC Belfast 10 Exchange Street Belfast, Northern Ireland, BT1 2NJ United Kingdom (map)

Informative talk and creative workshop 'Connecting Feminist Past, Present and Futures' with Dr. Yassin Brunger.

This workshop is a chance to be inspired by the wisdom of Sojourner Truth's famous speech “Ain't I a woman” delivered at the 1851 Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio and Bell Hooks' transformative work, “Ain’t I A Woman: Black Women and Feminism (1981)”.

The focus of the session is on stories of womanhood to raise timeless questions about feminism. Together we creatively explore the interconnections between the stories of womanhood from the past, to the present, and the future.  This is a chance to listen and reflect on women’s experiences, women's rights and women's aspirations.

Dr Yassin Brunger is Lecturer in Human Rights Law at Queen's University Belfast and Co-Director of the QUB Gender Network. She is a feminist academic-activist and specialises in gender, human rights and international law. She has worked with a broad range of stakeholders, including international organisations, national governments, and civil society across the globe on issues of sexual and gender-based violence and gender inequality. She is a dedicated champion of race equality and inclusion in Northern Ireland and is co-organiser of the award winning 'Black History Month campaign' in Northern Ireland which included the highly acclaimed 'Black HERstory'.
